Join us for an Open Studio with Demetri Broxton during Nexus: SF/Bay Area Black Art Week, and step into the richly layered world of an artist whose work bridges ancestral memory, spirituality, and material culture. Known for his intricately embellished mixed media pieces, Demetri draws upon African and Filipino heritage, Southern craft traditions, and hip-hop aesthetics to explore themes of identity, power, and protection.
An Oakland-based artist and arts leader, Demetri transforms traditional materials—beads, cowrie shells, boxing gloves, textiles—into contemporary artifacts that honor cultural resilience and personal lineage. His hand-stitched surfaces and symbolic forms invite close reflection on the sacred, the ancestral, and the embodied. Through process-intensive labor and symbolic adornment, Demetri reclaims and redefines objects of conflict and survival as vessels of strength and spiritual significance.
This open studio offers a rare opportunity to witness Demetri’s evolving practice and engage directly with the artist in an intimate setting. Whether examining recent works or joining a conversation about art, heritage, and ritual, visitors will gain insight into how creativity becomes a vessel for healing, storytelling, and cultural affirmation.
